We are the sole sake brewery in Motomiya City, Fukushima Prefecture

Adatara Mountain is an active volcano in the central region of Fukushima Prefecture.

Adatara Mountain can be found in such works as 「智恵子抄」”Chiekoshou,” a 1941 collection of poems by Kotaro Takamura, and long ago the mountain was also referenced in the Man’yoshu, an eighth century anthology of Japanese poetry. Therefore, many people across Japan are acquainted with the mountain.

Daitengu Sake Brewery was founded in 1872. Located near the main JR train station of Motomiya City at the center of Fukushima Prefecture, we bring to life the taste of Motomiya with the spirit, skill, and tradition of southern brewers.

This is our brewery’s chimney. Although it is currently not in use, it stood firm through the Great Earthquake of 2011, and of course still stands proud today.

A look at one moment in our sake brewing process.

■ Daitengu Sake Brewery’s origin

In the early days of the Meiji Era, Daitengu was a warehouse business. In preparation for shifting into the sake brewing business, we requested our clients to pick up their goods, and two wicker trunks remained unclaimed. When they were opened, there were two goblin masks. Taking this to be a blessing from the gods and a good omen for the start of the sake brewing business, the new company was named Daitengu, meaning Great Goblin.
